Daily Express: 7 Skin Cancer Symptoms

The Daily Express gives valuable advice on 7 signs of skin cancer.

The list of what to look for included melanoma and non-melanoma – both types of skin cancer but with different symptoms, causes and risks.

Seven symptoms of skin cancer

  1. Brand new mole (melanoma)
  2. A dark mole (melanoma)
  3. An irregular-shaped mole (melanoma)
  4. The location of the mole – they can appear anywhere but most commonly appear on men’s backs and women’s legs (melanoma)
  5. Red scaly patch (non-melanoma)
  6. A patch which itches and bleeds (non-melanoma)
  7. A red scaly patch that grows out the skin and forms a little bit of a raised bump (non-melanoma)

Melanoma vs Non-Melanoma

Dr Ross Perry was invited to help explain the difference between melanoma and non-melanoma.

Melanoma

Dr Ross Perry explained:

“This is the that one can spread and kill people and is the most aggressive of the two forms of skin cancer.

Melanomas are generally dark, irregular and flat moles.

“But they can occur on any part of your body – most commonly for men on the back, most commonly for women on the legs.”

An estimated 70% of all melanomas are a brand new mole.

Non-Melanoma

Dr Ross Perry explained how non-melanoma tend to look different:

“They often start as a red scaly patch of skin and they often itch and bleed a little bit.

“They can often sometimes even grow out of the skin a little bit and from a little bit of a raised bump.

Non-melanoma are more related to sun exposure. The good news is that treatments tend to be better for the patient:

“Non-melanoma skin cancers are much more easily treated and much more common in people in their 50s, 60s and 70s.”
