Expert Advice from Dr Ross Perry

London Mole Removal Centre & Cosmedics Skin Clinics Founder

HELLO! Magazine’s website explore the skin cancer signs that people may be missing with expert advice from Dr Ross Perry.

The feature followed HELLO!’s live broadcast with Dr Perry from the Harley Street Mole Removal Centre and introduces the issue saying:

“We all know that changes to a mole can be a sign of skin cancer, however, many Brits are missing one major symptom of melanoma, according to Dr Ross Perry.”

Dr Ross Perry explains some of the myths about skin cancer, saying:

“The common myth is that people think they have to have been sunburnt or had lots of sun in the past to get skin cancer but that’s just not true. Unfortunately for melanoma there is a risk with sun exposure but also people can just develop them anyway.”

Melanoma – What to Look For

He says that a key sign of melanoma is its appearance, explaining:

“They are classically a dark, black, flat mole. In men the commonest site is on the back, and in women the commonest site is on the legs. But these are things that people need to spot as opposed to feel any symptoms from. So it’s important that people check their bodies for these new or irregular looking moles.”

Ross recommends a regular mole check, where people should be particularly checking any new or irregular moles for signs of change.

Non-Melanoma – What to Look For

Non-melanoma tends to appear for patients in their 50s or 60s and looks different to melanoma

“…patch of skin that doesn’t heal, it comes and goes and can be a little bit painful.”

Tanning and Skin Cancer

Dr Perry says that sunburn is a kay cause of skin cancer, so sensible precautions are essential before any sun exposure:

“You can get a tan, the main thing is just to not get burnt. Getting burnt increases your risk of skin cancer, and I would advise that no matter what skin tone you are and however much you think you’re not going to burn, you should put sunscreen on.”

In addition to high SPF sunscreen, patients are advised to seek shade where possible when out of doors, especially in the sun’s peak hours of 11am-3pm.
