Histology is the laboratory examination of a removed mole under a microscope. After a mole is excised, the tissue is sent to a specialist pathology lab where it is processed, sliced into very thin sections, stained, and examined by a consultant histopathologist. The aim is to determine exactly what the mole is at a cellular level.
This testing is important because visual examination alone cannot always confirm whether a mole is completely benign. While clinicians use dermoscopy to assess moles before removal, some early skin cancers can look very similar to harmless lesions. Histology provides diagnostic certainty by identifying abnormal or cancerous cells that are not visible on the surface.
In many clinical settings, histology is recommended whenever a mole is fully removed, especially if there is any uncertainty about its appearance. Even moles that seem low-risk may still be tested as part of a safety-first approach. This reduces the risk of missing early melanoma or other forms of skin cancer.
Histology is charged separately because it is carried out by an external specialist laboratory rather than the clinic itself. The cost covers tissue processing, slide preparation, microscopic analysis by a trained pathologist, and the production of a formal diagnostic report. It is therefore a third-party medical service, not part of the surgical procedure.
Most histology results confirm that a mole is benign, which provides reassurance. In a small number of cases, however, abnormal or cancerous changes are identified. When this happens, early diagnosis allows for prompt treatment and significantly improves outcomes.
Although the additional cost may be undesirable, histology is a standard and important part of safe mole removal. It ensures that diagnosis is confirmed at a microscopic level, which visual inspection alone cannot always achieve.
