Lipoma treatment and removal
Lipomas are soft, fatty lumps that develop beneath the skin. They are very common and can occur almost anywhere on the body, particularly on the shoulders, back, arms, neck and thighs.
A lipoma is usually slow-growing and feels soft or rubbery to touch. In most cases, lipomas are harmless, but many patients seek removal because the lump is becoming larger, uncomfortable, visible through clothing or simply causing cosmetic concern.
At the London Mole Removal Centre, our experienced doctors assess and remove lipomas using advanced surgical techniques designed to minimise scarring and downtime.
‘See and Treat’ Lipoma Removal – our convenient service means many patients can have their consultation and lipoma removal performed in the same appointment, saving time and avoiding repeat visits where clinically appropriate.
What is a Lipoma?
A lipoma is a benign (non-cancerous) fatty growth that sits beneath the skin. Unlike cysts, lipomas are generally deeper under the skin and feel soft and movable.
Lipomas can vary in size from small pea-sized lumps to much larger swellings. Whilst they are usually painless, some lipomas can become uncomfortable if they press against nerves or are located in areas subject to pressure or friction.
Although lipomas are not normally dangerous, any new or changing lump should always be properly assessed by a qualified doctor.
How is Lipoma Removal Done?
Lipoma removal is carried out using minor surgical techniques under local anaesthetic.
The procedure is generally straightforward and comfortable. Once the area is numb, the doctor carefully removes the fatty lump through a small incision. The wound is then closed with stitches where required.
At the London Mole Removal Centre, our doctors aim to keep scarring as neat and minimal as possible using modern surgical methods and careful wound closure techniques.
Most procedures are completed within 30-60 minutes depending on the size and location of the lipoma. Patients are usually able to return home shortly afterwards and resume normal daily activities quickly.

Do I Need Lipoma Removal?
Many lipomas are harmless and do not require treatment. However, patients often choose removal because:
- The lump is growing
- It catches on clothing or causes discomfort
- It becomes cosmetically noticeable
- There is uncertainty about the diagnosis
- The area becomes tender or irritated
Our doctors will always advise honestly whether removal is appropriate and in the patient’s best interests. If treatment is not recommended, this will be fully explained.

Aftercare Following Lipoma Removal
Following lipoma removal, patients will usually have a dressing placed over the wound. Mild swelling, bruising and tenderness are normal during the early healing period.
Most patients can shower normally after 1-2 days, although soaking the area or strenuous exercise should be avoided for around 1-2 weeks depending on the site treated.
Our team provides full aftercare advice and support to help ensure the best possible healing and cosmetic outcome.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions About Lipoma Removal
Is a lipoma dangerous?
Lipomas are usually harmless benign fatty lumps and are not cancerous. However, any new, changing or rapidly growing lump should always be assessed by a qualified doctor to confirm the diagnosis and rule out other conditions.
Can a lipoma go away on its own?
Lipomas do not normally disappear without treatment. In many cases they remain stable for years, although some gradually increase in size over time.
Does lipoma removal hurt?
Lipoma removal is performed under local anaesthetic, so the area is numbed before treatment begins. Most patients experience little discomfort during the procedure itself. Mild soreness or tenderness afterwards is normal and usually settles within a few days.
Will I have a scar after lipoma removal?
Any surgical procedure can leave a scar, but our doctors use careful surgical techniques designed to minimise scarring wherever possible. The final appearance of the scar depends on the size and location of the lipoma as well as individual healing characteristics.
How long does lipoma removal take?
Most lipoma removals take between 30 and 60 minutes depending on the size and complexity of the lump.
Can lipomas come back after removal?
Once completely removed, most lipomas do not return. However, some patients may develop new lipomas in different areas of the body over time.
When can I return to work after lipoma removal?
Most patients return to work straightaway. You can expect a simple dressing and any discomfort is manageable with painkillers.
What about exercise and lifting?
More strenuous exercise or heavy lifting may need to be avoided for a short period depending on the location of the treatment area.
Is lipoma removal covered by the NHS?
Small harmless lipomas are not always routinely treated on the NHS, particularly if removal is considered cosmetic. Many patients therefore choose private treatment for faster assessment and removal without long waiting times.
Can multiple lipomas be removed at the same appointment?
Yes, in many cases multiple lipomas can be treated during the same visit. Your doctor will advise what is possible following assessment at consultation.
Do you send lipomas for testing?
This is not usually required but where clinically appropriate, we can send removed tissue for histology (laboratory testing) to confirm the diagnosis. Your doctor will discuss this with you during your appointment.
