Broken red, blue or purplish veins can spoil the complexion on the face or body.

A broken vein, also known as thread vein, occurs when veins become enlarged or swollen so that they are visible near the surface of the skin.

Leg Thread Veins

Broken veins on the legs tend to have a red/bluish/purple colour. The name ‘thread veins’ accurately describes the thin lines that appear. They are often found on the thigh area and around the knees, but can appear anywhere on the legs.

Thread veins are not the same as varicose veins as they do not have the bulging/twisted appearance and do not cause discomfort or other problems. The main issue is the appearance.

Facial Thread Veins

Broken facial veins are often start quite small as a red ‘blood spot’, but then grow into a larger vein or network of veins. They’re sometimes referred to as ‘broken capillaries’ as the veins are so tiny, but when there are a lot of them, they appear more of a red patch, with the individual veins being less obvious than the overall effect.

Facial thread veins can often be result from smoking, alcohol, sun damage or weather damage; but there isn’t always a specific cause.

As with leg thread veins, the main problem is cosmetic and as such, treatment on the NHS is very unlikely.

Thread Vein Treatment

Thread Vein Treatment

Thread veins don’t tend to clear up as they are a result of damaged veins.

However, thread veins can be treated very effectively with our straightforward methods which are fast AND effective.

Leg thread veins can be treated using either sclerotherapy injections, microcautery laser or advanced laser treatment.

For finer facial veins, we recommend either advanced laser (available at our Putney clinic) or microcautery laser treatment.
